Description
The life of the battery bank can be significantly shortened by the charging imbalance of individual batteries. This is a situation where you have 12 V batteries connected in series or in series (not only in parallel!). In such a system, one 12 V battery with a slightly higher internal resistance may cause non-charging in the case of batteries in parallel and overcharging in series-connected batteries. New battery cells or whole batteries in series have almost identical initial properties. Their slight differences are compared during the absorption or equalization phase of the charge. However, large differences can lead to excessive gassing caused by overcharging on more charged batteries and unwanted sulfation of less charged batteries due to non-charging to full state.

The solution is balanced charging using a battery balancer. It balances the state of charge of two 12 V batteries connected in series or several parallel series of batteries connected in series. As soon as the charging voltage of the 24 V system rises to more than 27.3 V, the battery balancer is activated and compares the voltage of two batteries connected in series. The balancer can redirect current of up to 0.7 A from one battery (or batteries connected in parallel) with a higher voltage to another battery. The result of the different charging current is a mutually identical state of final charge of all batteries.

Battery balancers can also be arranged in parallel for more complex systems. U 48 A total of three balancers are used in the system (see diagrams).

Explanation of LED indicators:
Green LED: the device is active and the measured voltage is higher than 27.3 V
Upper orange LED: voltage deviation is greater than 0.1 V
Lower orange LED: voltage deviation is greater than 0.1 V
Red LED: triggers an alarm if the difference between the monitored batteries is greater than 0.2 V. The alarm persists until the difference is less than 0.14 V or if the system voltage does not drop to less than 26.6 V

Significance of alarm relay
By default, it is open (inactive). It closes (activates) if the red LED lights up, ie if the voltage difference between the batteries is higher than 0.2 V. As soon as the red LED goes out, the relay opens (deactivates) again (the decrease in voltage difference between the batteries is smaller than 0.14 V).

Alarm reset
The alarm can be switched off by interconnecting the outputs marked as RESET. This can be done using a switch.

Installation
1) The battery balancer (s) must be installed on a well-ventilated vertical surface near the batteries (but due to the possible influence of gases from the batteries not directly above them!)
2) If required, install alarm contact wiring and reset wiring.
3) Use at least a 0.75 mm2 cable to connect the negative, positive and center poles (in that order!)
The balancer is ready for operation. If the voltage on any of the monitored batteries (string) rises above 27.3 V (during charging), the green LED will light up, which means that the balancer is activated. In this situation, if the deviation of the batteries (strings) is greater than 50 mV, active balancing, ie compensation of the difference between the batteries (strings), begins. If the deviation reaches 100 mV, one of the orange LEDs is activated. A deviation of more than 200 mV will trigger an alarm relay.
In the case of series-parallel battery switching, the middle interconnection cabling between the parallel rows must be of such a dimension as to handle the relevant current if part of the battery is disconnected.
